Who I am...

I am Pam Rivers, a 5th grade teacher, a doctoral student at the University of Southern California and a strong believer in Education Reform--although not in that typical "back to basics" kind of reform. My site will lead you to lots of interesting books and ideas that I believe can help reform our current system of Education.

A Little Traveling Music Please...

China
Part of my own education is traveling to other parts of the country or the world. In 2004, I spent 5 weeks teaching English in Shanghai, a trip that truley changed my life..
Paris
I spent10 days in Paris in 2004, but a bout of Bronchitus makes me feel sure I need to go back to really appreciate it.
Monterey
Monterey, CA seems unreasonably devoted to John Steinbeck, whom I never really appreciated. However, the aquarium was worth going back for.

Why I Teach

I believe that all students can learn, which I think is basic for anyone who decides to go into this field. Beyond that, I believe that all students have the capacity to love learning, provided it's not drilled into their heads or forced down their throats. If we treat learning as if it's something painful to be endured, how can we expect kids to embrace it? When kids enjoy what they're doing, they will spend time doing it and do it better.

My Newest Adventure .
So this year, I am embarking on a new teaching adventure. I will be teaching Junior High Language Arts. Many, many people think I'm crazy, but I am ready for this particular challenge. Now, whether I'm prepared for it, I guess we'll see. Because people tend to think teaching this age is only for crazy people, I've decided to blog at least some of my experiences here. We'll see how it goes.

People I admire...

Bill Moseley
Jonathan Kozol
Alfie Kohn
David Rivers
Frank Smith
Gary Stager
Peter Reynolds

Everyone on my list is somehow involved in education, and has something interesting to say about it.
